Newmanstown resident Eddy Ray has had a lifelong love of magic, and he has turned that into a career.

“About 31 years ago, I was 5 or 6 years old, and I got some magic tricks for Christmas from my uncle,” Ray said. “He got me three or four smaller magic items from the local magic shop, Mingus Magic Shop, in Reading.”

Ray, who grew up in Mohnton, Berks County, started learning how the tricks worked, and how to entertain people with them in the weeks after the holiday.

“I took off with those tricks, and I would entertain friends and family with them,” Ray said. “As the years progressed, I started getting magic kits and things like that for birthdays, and my repertoire grew from there.”

Ray began to his stride as far as performances were concerned when he got into high school.

“I did different events and parties, as well as some stuff in school,” Ray said. “I also started working at a local magic shop at the old Zern’s Market in Gilbertsville.”
